A little story about Tomatoes & Savings
After graduating from University, I went to work in New York City. Oh boy, it was such exciting times! I loved the energy of the city, the vibrancy of the people, the eclectic food, amazing party scene, and all the fantastic opportunities that arose from being young in a new city.
However, I also quickly realized that the cost of living in Manhattan was HIGH and my salary was pretty LOW. On top of that, I had a bunch of student loans and some credit card debt to pay off as well. As such, I had to be extremely MINDFUL of what I spent on EVERYTHING!
This included TOMATOES!
“Tomatoes?” you ask yourself?
Why yes my friend. It so happens that the salads I bought for lunch in the canteen were charged by weight and as you are probably well aware, tomatoes happen to be quite heavy! In fact, I remember vividly counting them ever so carefully to ensure the weight would keep the cost of the whole salad under $7.00.
The money I saved then went to other important items in my BUDGET, such as general SAVINGS & DEBT payments.
That small lesson in “counting my tomatoes” helped me learn early on in life, the importance of saving money on the small things because soon enough it all ADDS UP.
After all, as Benjamin Franklin wisely said: “Beware of little expenses. A small leak will sink a great ship.”
So, for a time in my youth I may have had to restrict consuming tomatoes and other more luxurious items, but the good news is that it helped me create a mindfulness of saving money, which soon became a HABIT.
And it’s something that each and everyone of us can do: create positive financial behaviors, which in a blink of an eye become patterns. Because little by little those habits and patterns create the action steps needed in helping us build Financial Resiliency and Financial Wellness.
So, here’s to “counting our tomatoes” and in the process learning to Wear Our Money Crowns with pride!
