Why Sleep is a Key Element of Success
I wanted to write this blog post earlier in the week, but as life has it, between working on my business, searching for a turkey (not an easy feat in the UK before Christmas), decorating our home, and having guests over to celebrate Thanksgiving, the week has gone by in a blink of an eye.
However, I wanted to make good on my promise from last week and share some additional #nuggetsofwisdom from the current book that I am reading, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, by Greg McKeown.
Today’s FOCUS is about protecting the most important asset we have…OURSELVES!
If we underinvest in ourselves, and by that I mean our minds, our bodies, our spirits, we damage the very tool we need to make our highest contribution.
Greg McKeown
In his book, Gregory shares that the most common way people, particularly ambitious and successful people damage themselves is through lack of sleep.
Wow.
I’m sure many of us are guilty of this! 🙋🏻♀️
I know I am and it is something, which I am actively trying to change. Why? Because as he explains, sleep is necessary for operating at high levels of contribution for longer.
Sleep helps us:
- Reserve Energy
- Enhance Creativity
- Increase our problem-solving abilities
According to a Harvard Business Review article called “Sleep Deficit: The Performance Killer”, Professor Charles A. Czeisler explained that sleep deprivation undermines high performance and can in fact cause an impairment similar to that in a person with elevated blood alcohol level.
Isn’t that so insightful?
Another study that Greg shared was by the journal Nature , which found that sleep was the biggest contributor to success.
Details of the Study:
A group of 100 volunteers were given a task: to solve a puzzle, which in order to be answered, required them to find a “hidden code”. The volunteers were then split into two main groups: one group had 8-hour uninterrupted sleep (lucky folks) and the others had their sleep interrupted.
Findings:
TWICE the number of people who slept for 8 hours were able to solve the problem vs the sleep-derived group. The reason behind this vast difference was the fact that when we sleep, our brain is working hard at encoding activity. Meaning that our brain has formed NEW neural connections, allowing us to access a broader range of solutions to problems.
Astonishing!
As a Financial Educator and Wealth Coach, I like to consider how all things in life relate to our finances because I believe there are many influences that can positively or negatively affect our wealth.

Now, after realizing how much more sleep enhances our creativity and productivity, which in turn enables us to positively influence our personal, business, AND financial decisions, I am sold on the importance of sleep.
My homework these coming weeks is to improve my own sleep patterns.
How about you friend, will you do so as well?
Wishing you a fabulous weekend and Happy Thanksgiving to all those that celebrate it!
XOXO,
Anna
